Objectives:

  • After completing this lesson, the student will be able to discuss the purpose, function and application of the satellite’s structure, power, ADC (attitude determination and control), and propulsion subsystems.

  • Discuss how the payload and mission objectives affect a satellite’s shape and size

  • Identify design considerations that drive the structural subsystem of a satellite

  • Discuss typical satellite power sources and their advantages and disadvantages for satellites to include solar arrays, batteries and generators

  • Describe the common types of attitude control of a satellite and the components used to control a satellite’s attitude

  • Explain the role of and key components of satellite propulsion systems
